Out of the Brooder...

Well we have had such a heat wave in Texas I decided to out the 2 week old chicks out in their special "growing up" coop within the hen enclosure. This way they have more room to roam and the hens and rooster will keep away. Hopefully snakes and other undesirables will stay away. All 26 babies seem to be healthy. I think I have 5 each of 5 different breeds and 1 strange yellow girl with irregular black markings. She must be the rare breed that McMurray Hatchery threw in as a bonus.

OddBalls

Here are a few of the chicks that McMurray Hatchery sent me. I have no idea what breed of chicken they are..... I guess I will post pix of these chicks when the grow up.

Mr Rooster

Well, here is my 4th Rooster in almost 10 years.... what shall I call him? He is still a junior boy, and not crowing yet, the 12 mama hens don't know what to make of him. He has som growing to do... and when my little ones grow up, in a few weeks, Mr Rooster will have 38 hens to take care of !!!!! He's a SPECKED LEGHORN. Never seen one like this but he will very pretty someday if he learns to strut his stuff right!

Aug 11/11

My 25 plus 1 bonus chick ARRIVED from McMurray Hatchery! I was such a dumbo, left my cell phone at work over night. The call from the post office came early but I didn't get my cell until my shift started at 1:30. Poor things were waiting for me for 8 hrs because I couldn't pick em up until 4 PM!!!
... But all 26 are OK, & strong. I have them in a temporary brooder in my kitchen. Hopefully I can transfer them outside in 3 weeks. Got the brooder around 92 f. We have had such an intense heatwave that I am sure the chicks would be OK outside in a protected area in the coop.
Can't identify any of these breeds but I will be able to recognise them soon, I hope. Meanwhile they are happily tweetering....
